Shystie - Blue Magic (mixtape)

Media_httppalmsoutnet_imeln

I'm not entirely sure how I managed to miss this, to be quite honest with you, but if you did too (and you're interested), go download the new mixtape, Blue Magic, from the original, bad gyal UK female MC, Shystie. Be sure to check back to her main page in a few weeks too. Apparently they'll be a whole new website uploaded with all the necessary bells and whistles on soon.

Drake 'Take Care' release date

Media_httpimg192image_wjlhe

On Friday, Drake announced his forthcoming second album, entitled 'Take Care', will be released on October 24th. I believe that the above image will be the front cover of the new album, as the artwork has been tagged as 'final web copy', so I'm assuming this is the case, anyway!

As most of you who frequent this blog will know, I'm a huge Drake fan, and I'm extremely excited to hear how the new album's developed from 'Thank Me Later', and also to see how the OVOXO collaborations have gone between Drake and Abel Tesfaye, AKA The Weeknd.

Going on strike in the name of art?

Media_httpminimalisti_dpeim

This afternoon I was reading some articles on the Faith Fanzine site. There's always articles and interviews on there that are of interest to me (I'm an old-skool house head at heart), but in particular, a transcribed, informal interview/conversation with the German techno producer and DJ, Steve Bug, caught my attention.

Essentially, I take from what he's saying is that a) producers are kicking out too many tracks, that b) are having little lasting impression on their audience, and c) all the tracks are being file shared, and that's he's considering going on strike, and only making music for himself and his own sets, which will in turn boost his exclusivity as a DJ.

If a producer is making more tracks, which are having less impact on the audience, and no one is paying for them, surely this cannot continue, and, essentially is a hugely counter-productive way of moving forward as an artist in the digital age... I have to agree. An interesting point that Steve makes from Stacey Pullen on the same matter, also; 'We didn’t use to release a record just because another month was over', which is entirely true if you care to look back a few years.

I'd add more of my own comments to what both Pullen and Bug have said, but it will turn into a small dissertation... so maybe next time!

You can read the full article from Steve Bug here on the Faith Fanzine site.

Warpaint - Rough Trade Sessions

Media_httpstaticguimc_ncfgi

I've never been one to subscribe to the hypest of the hype. I tend to discover an artist months before the general cool world care, of months after they've moved on to the next bright, shiny thing. In this case, Warpaint, for me, is of the latter discover category. Friends have mentioned to me about them, I've skim read articles about them as a band and their music, but up until yesterday I'd never consciously listened to their music. Below are their Rough Trade sessions from earlier this year. These truly blew me away.

Orange Hill ft. Kano, Busy Signal & Fatman Scoop - Wine De Best (video)

New crazy dancehall business with a distinctly UK production flavour from Orange Hill Productions, who are Ras Kwame (former BBC Radio 1Xtra DJ and UK urban music don) and Jnr Tubby. The three MC's really should need no introduction; Kano (one of the best UK MCs we've got), Busy Signal (JA dancehall superstar) and the slightly dubious hype man selection... Fatman Scoop ('FATMAN SCOOP HERE WE GOOOO'). Enjoy!

Ed Sheeran - Y.N.M.I.D.N.Y (True Tiger Remix) [Video]

A remix in the dance music sense of the word, but also in the hip-hop sense, as this 'remix' features two of London's hypest MC's, Dot Rotten and Scrufizer, providing the additional bars. It's not my favourite True Tiger remix to date (I'm a big fan of theirs), but it's definitely worth a listen anyway (the video isn't exactly 'wow' in all fairness either) and I'd suggest waiting it out for the synth solo that True Tiger have added at the end... as that truly is wicked!
